In other words: Isn't GPL a lie?

Okay, which one is really OSS?

GPL vs MIT?

Which one is truly OSS?

They're both open source. The difference is that with MIT license a company can take the code, modify it and then publish the product without giving anything back. While with GPL if you publish a modified GPL software you must share your code.

MIT license has no restrictions to close it.
While GPL pushes more in terms of keeping the source code open.

Game companies don't like the GPL license. All the companies making software for the desktop don't like the GPL because there isn't a way to make money and be competitive with an open source product for the Desktop. That is why there are very few decent desktop products for Linux.

While GPL is working well for products that run on servers, because companies can make a business on it offering services and they have no problems to give the modified source code back
